Khaki hound is a boarding facility with a mission. As our kennel grows, our goal is to establish and maintain the charity Veteran's Buddy Team Support Group. Vet Buddies will provide care for pets of veterans hospitalized at Dwight D. Eisenhower VA facility. This will ensure veterans admitted to Eisenhower VA will rest easy knowing their special "Buddy" is near and will receive VIP (Very Important Pet) care and comfort.
Vet Buddies knows and understands the importance to our veterans of their service and companion animals. Help us to serve them as they have served us by using our services to raise funds and make Vet Buddies' goal a reality.
Our Managing Director has over 25 years experience in the animal care field and is totally at ease with all breeds and sizes of both dogs and cats, from the youngest to the most senior. She is also very comfortable with pocket pets and reptiles, which are also welcome to come and stay at the Khaki Hound and Camo Kitty. Cathy's extensive experience ranges from kennel attendant to veterinary assistant to head receptionist and office manager at the largest veterinary practice in Bloomington, Indiana. Before relocating to the Leavenworth area, she also had her own pet sitting service, focusing on pets that required more individual care due to illness or age.
Relocating to the Leavenworth area brings her closer to her family, brother Fred Polk and sister Susan Polk (both long time residents) while pursuing her long time dream of operating a boarding kennel that offers a very high standard of care in a safe and loving environment, where guests are treated as the very important family members that they are.
Cathy's daughter Samantha Gunderson, son-in-law Shawn and granddaughters Nevaeh and Ella along with her three dogs and three cats: Laney a 13 year old Beagle/Dachshund Mix, Caliber a 12 year old American Staffordshire Terrier, Magnum an 11 year old American Staffordshire Terrier, Clyde a 12 year old Orange Tabby, CeeLo a 3 year old Black/White DSH and Jezibel a 1 year old Maine Coon also made the move from Indiana. And we cannot forget Walter an African Water Frog and Dino a Leopard Gecko.
As managing director Cathy will not only be over seeing our caring staff, but also providing the hands on care to make sure all of our guests have a safe and fun visit with us.
As a Care provider, will be responsible for making sure our guests are comfortable, clean, happy and entertained. As Cathy's daughter she was raised with an assortment of furry family members (even some with scales or feathers) and learned at a very young age how to provide the daily care required to keep them healthy and happy.
If you ask her if there has ever been a time in her life without an animal companion, her answer would be no, she will probably tell you it was usually multiple pets. Her first job at age 15 was working in a very busy veterinary clinic as kennel staff. During the school year, she worked daily after school and on Saturdays, going to full time during the summer. Her responsibilities included: caring for boarding and hospitalized pets, cleaning kennels and assisting the veterinarian as needed. Even though she pursued a career as a dental assistant, she was always ready to assist in the care of her mother's pet sitting clients.
Cathy's sister shares her deep love of animals. She will be sharing in the responsibility of making sure our very important guests have a comfortable, fun experience during their stay. She will do whatever needs to be done to make that happen. A retired Air Force nurse, Susan is the Financial Director of the Khaki Hound and Camo Kitty.
We offer state of the art safety and security with 18 large airy indoor/outdoor suites with comfortable off the floor beds covered with fleece pads. For our more indoor minded canine guests we offer large, medium and small kennels all with plenty of room to stretch out. And when it's time to go outside we offer time in one of our 50 square foot runs or a refreshing walk.
Khaki Hound also features a 1500 square foot play area with space enough for the most energetic canine guests to get exercise and sunshine in an enclosed dog friendly environment.
Our feline guests will enjoy our state-of-the-art premium double-sized kitty condotels from Shor-line. The condetels provide enough space for comfortable sleeping and a private litter box.
The Camo Kitty Cattery also provides a partitioned atrium to allow each cat its own climbing tree and a complete outdoor view from anywhere in its private climbing space. A greenhouse is attached to the cattery to provide quality bird watching and lounging in the sun.
All of the animal quarters are housed in a custom-designed secure location. Concrete and sloped-earth protect and insulate the facility on three sides. The formidable southern wall is designed to allow maximum light in while also providing maximum protection from turbulent Kansas weather. The wall encloses the entire southern flank of the first floor and exceeds hurricane structure standards. The ceiling is anchored with over 500 hurricane straps. Beams and pillars supporting the structure are reinforced and include Paralam formed composite products manufactured by Weyerhaeuser.
The entire kennel area on the first floor of the building meets FEMA residential tornado shelter standards. In extreme weather, your pets are probably safer with us than at home with you. Don't worry, we have enough room in each run for the dog and the average family! So, if the wind is howling--head for the Hound! Khaki Hound and Camo Kitty V.I.P. Quarters, that is.
Khaki Hound will board a veteran's pet for free while they are hospitalized and in recovery at Leavenworth's VA Hospital.
If medical authorities permit, Khaki Hound will transport a veteran's pet to the hospital for a visit or vice versa.
If the veteran is placed in hospice care, these services will continue.
If the animal passes away while a veteran is receiving care, VBTSG will arrange for proper internment of the animal in accordance with the veteran's wish.
If a veteran becomes permanently unable to care for the animal, we will--with the veteran's consent--arrange for suitable adoption and/or continued care of the animal.
The mission of the Khaki Hound & Camo Kitty is to provide your pet with the highest quality of care in the most comfortable and caring environment while you are away.
